The rain pitter-pattered on my head, in sync with every step I took. Lost, I guess that was one way you could describe my situation. But I wasn’t really lost; I had run away from what would’ve been my horrible fate. Now, I was completely alone in the dark forest. Who knew what kinds of creatures lurked in these areas, waiting for an unsuspecting victim? I erased those thoughts from my head as I kept going on, each step resulting in a soft crunch from a dried up autumn leaf.
At least it was quiet here, but a little too quiet for my liking. There were no wolves howling at the full moon, no toads croaking in the pond, not a single cricket dared chirp. I stopped at the pond, grey and murky from all the ashes and pollution. This was fowl doing of our society, exactly what I had run away from, chaos and destruction. If I had ever thought about going back, this set my mind straight on why I should stay away. I wasn’t ever going back; I wasn’t going to be a goner like the rest of them.
These thoughts fluttered about in my head as I kept walking. Walking, walking in a forest that never seemed to end. The further I explored, the more lost I became, becoming entangled in the maze of trees and shrubs, forever trapped amongst the burnt foliage.
Suddenly, a noise alerted my senses. There was a voice, voices, the very ones that had driven me out of my house, away from my family forever. That’s when I began to run, my heart pounding in my chest, my pulse quickening with each step. I knew they were getting closer, with each fumble or fault I made; they were a step closer to catching me. They were nearing, approaching faster and faster, knowing I couldn’t outrun them. So I stopped, stopped and stood, and nothing more. It was my time, time to accept my fate, time to join my family and friends.
Dark figures appeared from behind the bushes. They laughed, they poked at me, but I didn’t move an inch. Then their leader approached, with pure hatred in his tone.
“This won’t take long,” he smirked. Beady red eyes stared me, eyes filled with nothing but pure, sinister evil. A gun was pulled, a shot was fired, and another one fell to the floor.
In the midnight forest, not a sound was heard, not even a scream.
